Godot will stop accepting code contributions written with AI

The Godot team has decided to tighten the rules for pull requests to the engine's source code. It announced that it will no longer consider proposals generated by artificial intelligence.

As stated by the Godot Foundation in its official blog, AI-generated code has become a major issue. Over the past few years, the team has already been flooded with code revision suggestions, consuming more and more of their time for review, but with the development of neural networks, the situation has reached catastrophic proportions. For a while, the Godot Foundation turned a blind eye to the situation, but this is no longer feasible.

"AI use also has a demoralizing effect. Checking pull requests is already a tedious job, but it can be rewarding because reviewers usually feel they are helping to educate a new project contributor who might eventually become a maintainer or reviewer themselves. If your feedback on proposals is simply consumed by a machine, it becomes much harder to justify spending free time on code reviews," added the Godot Foundation.

The engine team emphasized that they are not against AI per se. For instance, they have no objections if developers continue to use neural networks for routine tasks—such as code autocompletion or working with regular expressions. However, generating significant chunks of code is not allowed.

Godot Foundation wants all future changes to the engine's source code to be proposed by people who understand their code and take responsibility for it.
