Epic Games has released Unreal Engine 5.8 and announced the release date for Unreal Engine 6

On June 17, the State of Unreal 2026 presentation took place in Chicago. During this event, Epic Games announced the official release of the next version of their engine — Unreal Engine 5.8.

One of the main innovations of Unreal Engine 5.8 is the Lumen Lite technology. This is a simplified system for dynamic global illumination that puts less load on the graphics processor than the standard Lumen and operates twice as fast. Epic Games emphasizes that the image quality when using Lumen Lite is almost unaffected. As a result, developers can easily achieve stable 60 fps on the Nintendo Switch 2, where there were previously challenges.

Another important new feature of the engine is Mesh Terrain. It allows the creation of large-scale landscapes based on a 3D mesh. The feature is currently in an experimental stage, and it is unknown when Mesh Terrain will become a permanent part of Unreal Engine.

However, several previously showcased features have moved from the experimental stage to being production-ready. These include MegaLights, Audio Insights, Live Link Hub, Iris, and Movie Render Graph.

According to Epic Games, Unreal Engine 5.8 will be the final update for the fifth version of the engine, as the company plans to focus on developing Unreal Engine 6. Nonetheless, they do not rule out working on Unreal Engine 5.9 if necessary.

During the presentation, Epic Games also revealed some details about Unreal Engine 6. For instance, they announced plans to merge the classic Unreal Engine with the Unreal Editor for Fortnite and integrate AI-based tools, including Claude and Gemini, into the engine. Additionally, it has been revealed that Unreal Engine 6 will feature a new programming language — Verse.

It is expected that early access to Unreal Engine 6 will open in late 2027, and the sixth version of the engine will be released 12-18 months thereafter.
