The preview version of Unreal Engine 5.8 has been released
Epic Games has released a preview version of the Unreal Engine 5.8, allowing developers to test out the tool's new features in advance.
Key innovations:
- An experimental feature called Mesh Terrain has been introduced. This is a new system for creating large-scale landscapes based on a 3D mesh, which natively works with the Procedural Content Generation framework for procedural content generation;
- The Procedural Content Generation system itself has been significantly enhanced. For example, developers can now manually edit generated content without losing procedural logic;
- Epic Games has improved the experimental plugin Procedural Vegetation Editor for creating and editing vegetation. According to them, working with flora has become significantly easier, and everything can now be done directly within the engine without using external programs;
- The engine has introduced another experimental plugin — MetaHuman Crowd. It allows real-time population of game worlds with crowds of characters, ranging from dozens to several thousand people;
- The MegaLights technology for realistic dynamic lighting has transitioned from the experimental stage to production readiness. Meanwhile, the Control Rig Physics feature for integrating procedural physics into character rigs has moved to the beta testing stage.
More details about these and other changes can be found in the Unreal Engine 5.8 roadmap.
The full release date of the new engine version is still unknown. Epic Games has not officially announced it, but there are rumors that Unreal Engine 5.8 might be fully released as soon as next month. It's possible the release will coincide with the Unreal Fest Chicago 2026, scheduled for June 16-18.
