Arjan Brussee, the co-founder of Guerrilla Games, reveals intentions to develop a game engine based in Europe
Arjan Brussee, known for co-founding Guerrilla Games, has revealed plans to create a gaming engine known as the Immense Engine, which he describes as a distinctly European choice compared to Unreal and Unity.
During an interview on the Dutch podcast De Technoloog, as reported by VGC, Brussee shared his vision for the new engine.
"There isn't any engine fully developed and operated within Europe that adheres to European standards and regulations," Brussee noted, emphasizing the significance of developing 3D environments for varied applications beyond gaming.
The new engine aims to feature modern development techniques and comprehensive AI capabilities. Brussee highlighted the need for innovative strategies in software creation with the advent of AI technologies. According to him, leveraging a robust AI framework could replace the efforts of multiple individuals.
He critiqued existing engines for being user-centric interfaces that require extensive alterations across the entire platform for any modification.
Prior to embarking on this venture, Brussee had an eight-year stint at Epic Games, where he held numerous positions, including the global director of product management for Unreal Engine.
Brussee's programming journey started in the 1990s with the development of Jazz Jackrabbit games. He also held a senior production role at Electronic Arts and was a co-founder of Boss Key Productions with Cliff Bleszinski, which was shut down in 2018.
His partnership with Martin de Ronde, Michiel Mol, and Arnout van der Kamp led to the foundational years of Guerrilla Games in 2000.
