Experienced industry figure Arjan Brussee reveals intentions to develop a game engine based in Europe
Arjan Brussee, a co-founder of Guerrilla Games, has revealed his intentions to create a new gaming engine, aiming to position it as a European substitute to existing technologies like Unreal and Unity.
In a conversation with the Dutch podcast De Technoloog, with translation provided by VGC, Brussee talked about his development of the Immense Engine.
He noted, “Currently, there is no engine that is both fully hosted in Europe and developed by Europeans in line with European standards.”
Brussee mentioned the engine will be equipped with advanced development methodologies and total AI integration.
The involvement of artificial intelligence in this field, according to Brussee, necessitates a novel approach to software development. He commented on the potential for AI to enhance productivity, noting the ability for well-designed AI frameworks to perform tasks equal to ten or fifteen people.
He criticized existing engines for being designed for users reliant on traditional user interfaces, suggesting updates require broad changes across the engine.
Prior to embarking on the Immense Engine project, Brussee accumulated eight years at Epic Games, holding pivotal roles such as global director of product management for Unreal Engine.
His career began in the 1990s with programming for the Jazz Jackrabbit series. He also held the position of executive producer at Electronic Arts and co-founded Boss Key Productions alongside Cliff Bleszinski, a company which closed in 2018.
Guerrilla Games, which Brussee helped establish in 2000, was founded with Martin de Ronde, Michiel Mol, and Arnout van der Kamp.
