Media: Development of Marathon cost over $200 million

The budget for Marathon was comparable to the budgets of The Last of Us Part II, Horizon Forbidden West, and Concord.

The budget for Marathon could have exceeded 200-250 million dollars

The cost of developing the extraction shooter Bungie, was discovered by Forbes journalist Paul Tassi. According to his information, it could be more than $250 million — and these expenses are only for creating the release version of Marathon, excluding future content and game support.

Bungie itself has never publicly disclosed Marathon's budget, so it is unknown how accurate Tassi's information is.

In any case, it will take quite some time for Marathon to pay off, if it ever does. Previously, analysts at Alinea Analytics calculated that in the first three weeks, Marathon earned $55 million and sold 1.2 million copies. To date, the numbers have likely increased, but by how much is unclear.
