The Cocos engine was purchased for $72 million
Now it belongs to the Chinese company SUD, which is developing a cloud platform for app gamification.
The terms of the deal are not fully disclosed. However, it is known that SUD plans to "deeply integrate" the engine and its team into its business. They anticipate that purchasing Cocos will make their platform's capabilities more comprehensive, while the engine creators will gain access to additional resources.
Cocos is an open-source engine initially designed for 2D games, but it later included tools for fully working with 3D graphics. Although it supports consoles and PCs, the engine is primarily focused on mobile and browser games, including popular mini-games in China. According to official statistics, Cocos is used by over 1.7 million developers worldwide.
The Cocos team is currently working on the next version of the engine, Cocos 4. Despite the deal with SUD, it will also operate under an open-source model. Moreover, the creators of Cocos promise to release some previously closed-source code to the public. The release date for Cocos 4 has not been announced yet.
