Unity for idle games, Phaser for match-3: which engines are used for different genres of web games
The Playgama platform has published statistics on the use of engines in web games, broken down by top genres. The sample includes games released in 2024 and 2025.
According to Playgama's calculations, web developers generally prefer to create projects using Unity, although in certain genres, they prioritize entirely different engines.
The highest share of Unity games is found among idle games—85.4%. Unity has also been the foundation for the majority of casual games (85%), racing games (80.9%), action games (78.3%), shooters (74.8%), iO games (74.5%), adventure games (65.5%), and puzzles (60.9%). However, in other genres, Playgama notes, Unity games comprise less than half.
Unity's weakest position is in the match-3 genre—only 10.7% of these games are made on this engine. Developers of such games showed significantly more interest in Phaser, which accounts for 44.8% of match-3 games. Projects on Construct (25.2%) and Cocos (13.8%) followed in popularity.
Phaser also outperformed all other engines in strategy (34.8%) and arcade genres (29.7%), while Construct led among animal games (38.6%) and merge games (33.6%).
