The development of the Russian engine Nau Engine will depend on the developer community

The Nau Engine team announced that they are transitioning to a "community-driven approach" in the engine's development. Now, the developer community will decide what Nau Engine should become.

"A community-driven approach will allow the engine to develop more efficiently and diversely than with standard commercial development," the Nau Engine team believes.

The creators of the engine added that expert support will continue to be handled by the Association of Game Operation and Development Professionals. Meanwhile, technical support will be taken over by the School of Video Game Development at ITMO University. In a comment to "Kommersant," Nau Engine representatives reported that part of the engine team has already been working at ITMO for some time. It is anticipated that ITMO will also teach students to develop games on the Nau Engine, becoming a true "testing ground" for the engine.

Additionally, it was revealed that the Nau Engine team has received support from the Institute for Internet Development (IID) and the indie incubator Prototype.Indie. The nature of this support—whether in grants or something else—has not been specified.

Recall that the development of Nau Engine began in 2023. It launched with the support of the VK group of companies, which invested a billion rubles in the creation of the engine. In November 2024, open beta testing of the Nau Engine began. How long it will last is unknown, but according to the engine's roadmap, Nau Engine is expected to be released around the end of 2025.
