Organizers of the GMTK Game Jam: Over the year, the share of Unity games declined sharply, while the share of Godot games increased

In mid-August, the GMTK Game Jam 2024 marathon took place, where 7,711 teams participated. It was revealed that nearly half of the participants are still developing games on Unity, but the share of projects using this engine is rapidly decreasing.

Breakdown of GMTK Game Jam 2024 participants’ games by engine

This year, participants created 3,324 games on Unity — 43% of all projects developed for GMTK Game Jam 2024. In 2023, the share of Unity games was 59%.

The second most popular engine at GMTK Game Jam 2024 was Godot, used for 2,838 games or 37%. Last year, its share was significantly lower at 19%.

Additionally, 5% of developers used the GameMaker engine (389 games) and Unreal Engine (383 games). Compared to last year, the share for GameMaker remained unchanged. The share of Unreal Engine increased, though the exact amount is not specified.

Previously, a programmer from the Godot engine team stated that amidst the Unity monetization scandal, the number of Godot users doubled in a month.
