Embracer Group cancelled the new part of Deus Ex after two years of development and fired part of the team (Updated)
An update has appeared. Eidos Montreal has confirmed the cuts.
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Initially, the layoffs in the Canadian studio were reported by Bloomberg.
What is known:
- The layoffs at Eidos took place as part of the ongoing restructuring at Embracer Group aimed at reducing costs;
- A total of 97 employees were laid off, including developers, as well as people responsible for administrative work and service support;
- Although there was no announcement of the new Deus Ex, work on it has been underway for two years;
- The game was supposed to enter the active development phase later this year;
- Instead of working on Deus Ex, it was decided to focus on working on the original franchise.
Recall that Eidos was acquired by the Embracer Group from Square Enix in the spring of 2022.
Embracer Group announced the restructuring in May 2023. By November last year, the company had reduced 5% of its staff (about a thousand people).
At the start of the cuts, it was reported that the procedure should be completed by March 2024.
