Over the past year, a third of game developers have changed their game engine or thought about doing so
The organizers of the Game Developers Conference (GDC), with the participation of the Omdia consulting firm, conducted a survey of 3,000 game developers. According to him, over the past 12 months, 7% of developers have already changed the engine, and 28% began to consider this possibility.
When asked why teams are switching or thinking about changing the engine, many called Unity's new monetization policy. Recall that last fall, Unity announced the introduction of the Runtime Fee collection. It obliges developers to pay with each installation of the game.
51% of developers also told GDC that they are interested in switching specifically to the free and open source Godot solution. Moreover, such an insider was shared not only by Unity developers, but also by those who work on the Unreal Engine.
As for the actual situation of use, there are no surprises here. The market is still divided between two main dominants — Unity (33%) and Unreal (33%). Plus, there are quite a lot of developers who use internal solutions (14%). As for Godot, it has only 3% so far.
