Developers from Magic: The Gathering Arena have expressed their intent to unionize under the Communications Workers of America (CWA).

This marks the initial unionization attempt for Wizards of the Coast, owned by Hasbro.

According to Valentine Powell, a senior software engineer speaking to Kotaku, the team expects to form a union with around 100 members, indicating a strong commitment among them.

This initiative began in response to significant layoffs affecting 2,000 Hasbro employees in 2023, followed by a further 3% reduction in 2025.

Neil White, another senior software engineer, mentioned that office return mandates have hastened the move towards unionization.

The developers wrote to management detailing their main issues, which include job security measures, remote work guidelines, protections against generative AI, stopping compulsory overtime, and ensuring fairness and openness.

Other points raised were the need for clear career paths, ownership of individual projects, and emphasis on sustainable game development partnerships.

The group, known as UWOTC-CWA, has asked for official recognition by week's end and has submitted a petition to the National Labor Relations Board.

Damien Wilson, a senior software development engineer and UWOTC-CWA member, stated, "At Wizards, we're seeking influence over layoffs, accountability at all levels, and wages that allow us to lead fulfilling lives."

He noted that this situation reflects a broader issue in American workplaces where profit is prioritized over the welfare of workers, stressing the importance of unions as a necessary balance.

Susie McAllister, CWA District 7 vice president, remarked, "Today's announcement is pivotal for these employees and the entire gaming sector."

She emphasized that all workers, whether in digital or tabletop gaming, should have job stability, fair pay, and representation.

"Together, we will ensure respect and dignity for game creators, which have been long deserved. CWA District 7 is pleased to support these members in their historic move towards unionization."
