The Game Developers Conference has confirmed its return to San Francisco in 2027

Despite ongoing concerns regarding attendance costs and international visitor apprehensions about U.S. travel, GDC is slated to make its return to San Francisco in 2027.

The event, now known as the GDC Festival of Gaming, is confirmed for March 1-5, 2027. Recently commenced, this year's festival has expanded beyond the Moscone Center, utilizing various venues across downtown San Francisco. This change has received a mixed reception from industry insiders.

This year, speculation persisted about the event's potential relocation due to long-standing criticisms over high participation costs, compounded by safety concerns raised by international attendees amidst U.S. government immigration policies. Nonetheless, GDC's organizer, Informa, indicated to GamesIndustry.biz that foreign attendance met expectations. Some businesses not attending or reducing their presence have reallocated funds to events like Develop Brighton and Tokyo Game Show, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz.

Persistent debates about GDC's location center on cost-effectiveness, with some proposing a move to less costly venues such as Las Vegas, Texas, or Canada. Due to recent widespread industry layoffs primarily affecting California workers in the gaming industry, this area’s role as a prime industry hub is under scrutiny.

Nonetheless, the Moscone Center experienced busy activity on the opening day, with attendees filling the venue and local hotels benefiting from offsite meetings. GamesIndustry.biz plans continued coverage throughout the weeklong event.
