Nintendo titles withdrawn from Japanese charity event
A significant speedrunning charity event, RTA in Japan, has revealed that Nintendo has informed them of a prohibition on using games owned by the company.
The non-profit group detailed in an announcement yesterday, with a translation provided by Automaton, that Nintendo communicated they must seek prior approval to display its games, stating previous uses were "unauthorized."
Automaton mentioned that RTA in Japan became recognized as a legal entity in 2020.
This notice from Nintendo was issued in June as the event organizers declared the absence of Nintendo titles in their upcoming event, occurring from August 9 to August 15.
The revenue from the summer event will be directed toward the charity, Doctors Without Borders.
Looking ahead, RTA in Japan will need to request "individual usage permissions for each title" to include such games in their events, as noted by Automaton.
The organization is currently in "negotiations" with Nintendo to facilitate these permissions.
