Outplay Entertainment, a mobile game development company based in Scotland, has reduced its workforce by 15% in an effort to "align operations with current business realities"

Outplay Entertainment, known as the largest independent mobile game developer in the UK, has reduced its workforce by over 20 positions. The company cites the need to adapt its operations to the current business climate as the reason for these layoffs.
Based in Dundee, Scotland, the studio claims a staff size of 135 on its website. It remains unclear if this figure accounts for the recent reduction of approximately 21 jobs, equating to about 15% of its workforce.
CEO Douglas Hare communicated to MobileGamer that earlier this week, the company had to reorganize certain segments, impacting 21 staff members across multiple departments.
The restructuring is part of Outplay's strategic pivot towards collaborating with publishers for future game launches.
Hare added, "This was not a decision taken lightly. We deeply appreciate the valuable contributions of the affected team members and are providing as much assistance as possible during their transition."
Outplay is known for producing several licensed mobile games, including Gordon Ramsay's Chef Blast, Angry Birds Pop!, and Subway Surfers Blast.
As of 2025, over 2200 developers in the gaming industry have faced layoffs. This trend includes reductions at companies such as Freejam, Splash Damage, Piranha Games, Jar of Sparks, Ubisoft, ProbablyMonsters, Iron Galaxy, Sumo Group, Liquid Sword, NetEase Games, Toast Interactive, Night School Studio, Striking Distance, Ballistic Moon, Eidos Montréal, PlaySide, AppLovin, Nerial, Reality Labs, and recent cutbacks at EA, including Respawn, People Can Fly, and Jagex.
