Scopely has announced that it will not implement layoffs in Niantic's games business after acquiring the company

Update, April 16, 2025: According to Mobilegamer.biz, the recent layoffs at Niantic had already been anticipated and did not impact the gaming division. Instead, they were related to the Spatial business. In a statement, Scopely asserted, "it will not be making any workforce reductions as part of our acquisition of Niantic’s games business."
Original story, April 16, 2025: Following the acquisition of Niantic by Scopely, a subsidiary of Savvy Games Group, valued at $3.5 billion, 68 employees have been laid off.
As identified by Game Developer, Niantic submitted a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) in California. This process mandates a 60-day notification period for mass layoffs.
The Employment Development Department of California's latest WARN report outlines the layoffs impacting 68 individuals, effective May 20, 2025.
The workforce reduction was initially revealed on March 20, as detailed in an internal email from John Hanke, CEO of Niantic, later shared on their website.
Hanke explained, "Niantic is forming two separate entities, with our games arm being acquired and our technology platform transitioning into Niantic Spatial Inc."
He further stated, "Operating as a startup, Niantic Spatial will require a leaner structure. After careful assessment, it became evident that certain positions were not necessary due to the shift in focus."
Hanke acknowledged, "These decisions are difficult and do not reflect on the individuals impacted. We recognize the effect on their lives, appreciate their contributions, and will provide support as they move to new career paths."
