Following its separation from Sega in March 2024, Relic Entertainment is set to pursue a new direction in its business operations.
Relic CEO Justin Dowdeswell stated in an interview with Game Developer that the studio's strategy will concentrate on three key objectives: sustaining support for current games, developing smaller-scale projects, and exploring older series through remasters, re-releases, or fresh creations.
Dowdeswell emphasized that this strategic shift would not necessitate any layoffs, countering events from the prior April when job cuts affected an undisclosed number of staff members after the company's sale. A former staff member indicated that 41 individuals were impacted.
"This new strategy equips us to meet our business objectives while maintaining the agility to seize market opportunities," Dowdeswell stated.
He further noted, "With smaller teams and shorter development timelines, we aim to bring games to market in about one to two years. While budget allocations will depend on project complexity, these ventures will have significantly lower budgets compared to the large-scale real-time strategy games we still plan to develop."
In conclusion, Dowdeswell expressed confidence in the studio's ability to produce unique, high-quality gaming experiences that will appeal to a global audience by leveraging its newfound independence and core competencies.
