Larian has announced that it will refrain from employing generative AI in creating concept art for Divinity.

Belgian game developer Larian Studios has officially stated that no generative AI will be used for creating concept art in the forthcoming RPG, Divinity. During a Reddit AMA session, Swen Vincke, the CEO and co-founder, affirmed the studio's decision against employing generative AI in the artistic process. He addressed previous misunderstandings from fans, clarifying that although the studio explored AI technologies, this did not extend to the production of concept art.
There had been concerns following Vincke's previous remarks about experimenting with AI in game development, which sparked criticism over potential use in generating concept art. In response, Vincke reasserted that no concept artists would be replaced by AI at Larian.
Vincke explained during the Reddit discussion that the decision to remove generative AI from concept art creation aims to assure players of the originality of the artwork. "There will be no generative AI art in Divinity," Vincke confirmed, acknowledging the confusion and outlining the studio's dedication to traditional artistry.
Despite this, Larian Studios remains open to utilizing AI internally to enhance development efficiency. Vincke expressed optimism about generative AI's potential to streamline the creative process and improve gameplay by increasing the speed and number of iterations. He emphasized that any AI-generated assets used in the game would be created with internally owned and consented data.
Larian's popular title, Baldur's Gate 3, has achieved sales exceeding 20 million copies. The studio recently revealed plans for a new addition to the Divinity series at The Game Awards 2025.
