Actor Troy Baker believes that creative professionals should not "demonize" artificial intelligence since it "cannot create art"
Renowned actor Troy Baker has expressed his perspective on the role of AI in the global gaming industry. While acknowledging that it might be easy to criticize AI, Baker suggests it will ultimately lead people back to seeking genuine experiences. "For centuries, humans have graced stages," he stated, emphasizing that it's a tradition worth trusting.
In a conversation with The Game Business, Baker—known for his roles such as Joel Miller in The Last of Us and Higgs Monaghan in Death Stranding—highlighted the essential role of artists in creating art. "Art demands the presence of artists," Baker underlined.
He elaborated, "There's a focus on AI's capabilities, but fundamentally, it doesn't negate my decision as a performer or producer to pursue my craft." Baker reiterated that, for thousands of years, people have continued this artistic journey, and that should be acknowledged as part of the artistic process.
Despite recognizing the concern among content professionals and the fact that AI could enhance content creation, Baker maintains that AI lacks the capacity to produce art because it lacks human experience.
"This surge in AI technology could actually foster a return to authenticity," he noted. "People might find themselves wanting tangible experiences; attending live performances, reading physical books, or engaging directly with art, as opposed to consuming digital versions. This could represent a new wave in the arts sector."
On a related note, Patrick Söderlund, CEO and founder of Embark Studios, recently affirmed that the company is committed to maintaining its workforce and not replacing people with AI.
