Viktor Antonov, the art director renowned for his work on Half-Life 2, has passed away.

Renowned art director Viktor Antonov, known for his work on Half-Life 2, has passed away at 52. His passing was verified on Sunday by Marc Laidlaw, former lead writer at Valve, through a social media post which has since been removed.

"I hesitated to share until confirmed, but learned today about Viktor Antonov's passing, our brilliant and original art lead for Half-Life 2," Laidlaw expressed. "I have no details, only grief. He enriched everything he touched."

Among those expressing grief was Raphaël Colantonio, founder of Arkane and WolfEye Studios, who posted on BlueSky.

Colantonio shared, "I regret not expressing my admiration more often, as life sweeps us along until such unexpected news strikes. Viktor was pivotal to Arkane Studios' achievements, inspiring many, and a cherished friend with whom I share wonderful memories."

Antonov's entry into the gaming industry began as a map painter for Redneck Rampage in 1997. His journey with Valve began in 2004, where his artistry was pivotal in bringing Half-Life 2 to life.

In 2012, Antonov contributed as a visual designer for Dishonored at Arkane Studios. He provided consultancy for several ZeniMax projects, including Fallout 4, Doom’s 2016 revival, and Prey.

His career also included involvement in projects that didn't reach completion, such as The Crossing, a first-person shooter by Arkane, and BattleCry, a multiplayer game by Bethesda Game Studios Austin.

Most recently, in 2022, Antonov co-established Eschatology Entertainment with Fuad Kuliev, Dmytro Kostiukevych, and Boris Nikolaev.
