Riot Games acquires Kanga to create esports fandom experiences

Riot Games has announced an acquisition of media technology startup Kanga, which is focused on creating different activities and experiences for audiences of esports franchises. The terms of the deal remain undisclosed.

The Kanga team will join the League of Legends developer’s Global Digital Esports group. It will help Riot Games develop experiences for fans of the company’s biggest games.

“Kanga represented the very rare and perfect mix of talent, shared vision, passion, and value alignment,” Riot Games director of esports product management Luke Cudney said. “I am so excited by what we are building together to foster deep, meaningful fan participation with esports.”

Founded in 2018, Kanga is known for offering merchandise sales, exclusive content, and social wagering to players and streamers of different franchises.

The acquisition is in line with Riot’s goal to expand into esports. With titles like Valorant and League of Legends: Wild Rift, the company continues to focus on competitive games in the constantly growing area.
