The App Store generates 85% more revenue compared to Google Play; the driver of the growth of the Apple store is China; Russia is now in the Top 3 in terms of app downloads from Google Play in the world — this and much more in the report for the first quarter of 2014, App Annie analysts said.

Let's start with the most interesting thing, the markets.

App Store

Compared to the previous quarter, the situation has not changed here. Another thing is, it is important to understand which markets are the main ones in terms of downloads and revenues today.

So, according to downloads on the App Store, the picture looks like this:

By the way, in February alone, 1 million new iPhone users appeared in China. So it is possible that the United States will soon be in second place in terms of installations.

The top countries in terms of App Store revenue are almost the same as the top in terms of downloads. The mentioned "almost" is Russia, which is currently only in the top ten box office countries.

In the first quarter of 2014, revenue from the Chinese App Store increased by 70% compared to the 4th quarter of 2013.

Google Play

The most interesting thing here is the appearance of Russia in the third place in terms of downloads in the world. The United States and Brazil, which has also grown in terms of indicators, separate us from the first place.

But neither Russia nor Brazil are in the Top 5 in terms of income. It may be of interest here, except that the castling of places between the United States and South Korea, which has again fallen to third place.

The United States dropped Korea due to revenue growth from Google Play, compared to the 4th quarter, by an incredible 55%. Such growth could be expected from emerging or Asian markets, but not from old America.

App Annie associates this dynamic with the equally impressive revenue growth of Clash of Clans on Android, which occurred after the aggressive TV advertising campaign of the game during the Super Bowl.

High downloads in Russia were due to a huge increase in sports app installations during the Sochi Olympic Games.

Other findings of the study

  • Global downloads from Google Play outstrip global downloads from the App Store by 45% (thanks to Brazil, Russia, Mexico and Turkey);
  • The App Store earns 85% more money than Google Play;
  • The main driver of App Store revenue growth in the first quarter of 2014 is China;
  • Games are still the most prolific category in both stores, but the Tools and Finance categories also feel great;
  • Messengers remain a dynamically developing category of applications.
