The Japanese tablet market has doubled in a year

Renowned expert on Far Eastern markets, Serkan Toto, shared some data from a study by Tokyo's MM Research Institute on the development of the tablet market in the Land of the Rising Sun in his personal blog.

According to his data, during the 2012 fiscal year, 5.68 million tablets were shipped in the country, which is 104% more than the previous year. The largest share still belongs to the iPad (52.5%), though there is a significant increase in the share of Android-based devices, which has already reached 42.4%.

Among Android tablet manufacturers, Asus is leading. The main factor for its leading position was the release of the Google Nexus 7.

Despite the rapid growth of this market, most Japanese developers are still primarily focusing on developing games for smartphones and are not yet planning to create special HD versions of their products. This is understandable: the total number of mobile handsets (feature phones and smartphones) in this market is 5-6 times greater than the number of tablets.

An interesting fact: in Russia, mobile app developers earn more from tablets than from smartphones.
