According to Sensor Tower, pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto 6 have nearly hit 8 million, with 74% of purchases made on PlayStation 5

As the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 approaches in two weeks, pre-orders for the game have surged to nearly eight million units, recent data reveals.
According to the GTA 6 tracker by Sensor Tower, the game has secured 7.71 million pre-orders, translating to an estimated revenue of $751 million.
The PlayStation 5 version is the dominant choice, capturing 74% of the pre-orders and generating $559 million. Meanwhile, Xbox Series X|S pre-orders constitute 26%, equating to $192 million in revenue.
In its first pre-order week in July, Newzoo estimated a $260 million revenue globally for GTA 6. The agency also forecasts a 17.5% increase in total game expenditures this year, driven by this upcoming release.
August data from Sensor Tower highlighted that 89% of orders are for the $100 Ultimate Edition, with only 11% choosing the $80 Standard Edition.
Karl Kontus, SVP and GM of Video Game Insights at Sensor Tower, mentioned to GamesIndustry.biz that if regular preorder patterns are observed, what is currently four million in preorders could evolve to over 40 million by launch day.
Comparatively, he stated that a more likely scenario would see around 25 million preorders, which could result in approximately $2 billion in sales, effectively covering development and a significant part of the marketing budget.
Further analysis, as noted in a report from Sensor Tower last month, showed GTA 6's pre-orders surpassing those of 2022's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 by 148% at the same stage before launch. This does not include physical box sales.
Experts previously informed GamesIndustry.biz that the game is anticipated to sell between 30 million to over 50 million copies worldwide.
