Developer Expression, known for Hell Let Loose, has established a new studio in Manchester. This move is "in response to what's happening in the talent market"

Expression Games, known for developing Hell Let Loose Vietnam remotely and co-developing Star Wars Galactic Racer, has unveiled plans for a new studio in Manchester. CEO Errol Ismail cited both team needs and those of co-development clients as driving factors for establishing a physical presence.

Since its launch in August, Hell Let Loose: Vietnam has reached one million sales, a milestone the company recently shared. Additionally, Ismail noted the two-year collaboration with Fuse Games on Star Wars Galactic Racer. Established in 2022 after Ismail and other executives left Fabrik, post-acquisition by the PlayStation subsidiary Firesprite, Expression Games has consistently excelled at the GamesIndustry.biz Best Places To Work Awards.

Ismail mentioned to GamesIndustry.biz that the inclusion of a physical office was part of Expression's broader plans from the start, although they maintain a commitment to remote work. This approach to remote operations began during his tenure at Fabrik, leveraging nationwide talent recruitment without geographical constraints.

The new studio is envisioned as a creative hub for collaboration and innovation, not a replacement for the flexible working arrangements currently in place. Employees will not be required to work from the office, nor will fixed working hours be imposed, allowing the team autonomy in their work preferences. The studio's design aims to reflect the company's culture and inspire in-person collaboration for those who choose it.

"Our people need more connections, they want more connections, and we need to facilitate that"

Ismail also emphasized Manchester's vibrant atmosphere as a significant factor in site selection. The city’s Northern Quarter, filled with creative energies and bustling activity, complements the lifestyles of Expression Games' team. This location supports their approach of providing flexibility and no mandated office hours.

The space is also strategic for future co-development projects, offering the infrastructure necessary for data management and collaboration with partners. Ismail expressed a desire to integrate talent development initiatives with local educational institutions, highlighting existing relationships with Manchester Metropolitan University and Bolton, and aims to expand these connections.
