Only 8% of gamers are strictly against AI-generated content in Steam games, according to a study

Analysts at GameDiscoverCo attempted to find out what Steam users think about games created with the help of artificial intelligence. To do this, they surveyed 3,800 people.

  • As discovered by GameDiscoverCo, the majority of surveyed gamers are at ease with the use of AI. Specifically, 23.4% reported to the analysts that they see no problem with it, a further 19.6% said they are completely satisfied, and 25.6% expressed neutral feelings.
  • Meanwhile, 23.3% of respondents are not too pleased when there is AI content in games. The remaining 8.1% are unwilling to purchase such titles under any circumstances.
  • On game pages in Steam, there's a special section titled “AI Content Information” that briefly explains why developers needed AI. However, many users of the store tend to overlook this section. A total of 10.9% of respondents never read what's written there, while another 44.7% give it only a cursory glance.
  • At the same time, 55.7% of respondents want Steam to place a label if studios have utilized AI agents like Claude Code.
  • Among those surveyed, 35.1% of gamers believe that only some developers honestly report that the graphics or sound in their games were generated by neural networks.

The analysts conducted the survey shortly after Epic Games' head Tim Sweeney criticized Steam for labeling games with AI content. To recap, he is convinced that the disclosure of such information only harms developers—it attracts the attention of AI opponents who heap tons of criticism on the games.
