More than half of surveyed mobile studios want to bring their games to the web, according to research

Analysts from Atomik Research examined the situation in the web gaming market. They conducted a survey for the gaming platform Poki, involving over 400 developers and 2,000 web gamers from the US and the UK.

Key findings:

  • 70% of developers surveyed by Atomik Research are currently focused primarily on mobile games, but many are interested in the web. Specifically, 53% of mobile teams plan to develop browser versions of their projects within the next 12 months;
  • 74% of developers believe that distributing games on the web is easy;
  • Among the advantages of launching on the web, developers most often mention the potential to attract a new audience (53%) and the potential to increase revenue (47%). Among the drawbacks, they cite technical barriers (53%), a lack of sufficient gamers (36%), and low revenue (36%);
  • 62% of gamers reported to analysts that they downloaded or purchased a game on traditional platforms after first playing it in a browser;
  • 57% of gamers play web-based games every day, and 27% of gamers play at least several times a week. They typically play during their free time at home (80%), in short breaks between tasks (34%), while traveling (22%), or at school/work (15%).
  • 27% of gamers spend more than $50 per month on web games.
