The Angry Birds franchise is set to make a comeback in China after a two-year hiatus, thanks to a collaboration between Rovio and Kingsoft Shiyou.

The comprehensive relaunch will be managed by Kingsoft Shiyou and includes the development of two new games.

Among them is a revamped Angry Birds 2, featuring a 3D engine with "dynamic level designs" and novel magical mechanics, alongside Angry Birds Dream Blast.

The new Angry Birds 2 will be pre-installed as a leading game on the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max smartphone.

Additionally, Rovio and Kingsoft are introducing the Mischief Maker creator program, allowing fans to craft custom designs and art, with potential for partnership opportunities.

"The enduring excitement and enthusiasm from our Chinese audience have been one of our greatest incentives," commented Rovio CEO Alex Pelletier-Norman.

"Through this alliance with Kingsoft Shiyou, we aspire to rekindle cherished memories and bring this classic series to Chinese fans in a novel and creative manner."

Liu Yi, VP of publishing at Kingsoft Shiyou, stated: "Our former collaboration provided insightful localization experiences.

"In the future, we not only aim for adept market operations but also intend to explore progressive and creative manifestations of Angry Birds across numerous sectors to ensure this cherished intellectual property continues to flourish in more diverse and enriched forms."

Earlier in 2023, the original Angry Birds was removed from the Android platform and underwent a name change on iOS due to "the game's effects on [Rovio's] broader games lineup." Read more here.

Ben Mattes, head of Angry Birds brand strategy at Rovio, detailed that the classic editions hindered the visibility of other Angry Birds titles in search results.
