A third of American gamers purchase games less than once a year, according to research

Gamers in the United States do not purchase games as frequently as might be expected, according to research by Circana. Analyst Mat Piscatella shared a segment of the report on Bluesky.

According to the study, only 4% of surveyed American gamers buy several games each month. Another 10% of respondents admitted to Circana that they add to their game collections monthly.

Here's how often the rest of the gamers purchase games:

  • every three months — 22% of respondents;
  • every six months — 18% of respondents;
  • once a year — 12% of respondents;
  • less than once a year — 33% of respondents.

Piscatella suggests that "hyper-enthusiasts" are largely responsible for the rising costs of games. Although there are relatively few of these gamers, they pay less attention to price tags and thus spend substantial amounts. Meanwhile, other gamers are increasingly shifting to free-to-play games.
