Borderlands 4 has already recouped two-thirds of its development costs — analysis

Within a week of its release, Borderlands 4 has generated over $150 million across all platforms, claims Alinea Analytics. According to analysts, this allowed the game to recoup 60-65% of its estimated production budget.

Alinea Analytics assessed that creating Borderlands 4 cost around $200 million. This figure was derived from a statement by Gearbox Entertainment's CEO Randy Pitchford, indicating that the budget for the fourth installment of the series was more than double that of Borderlands 3. In 2020, journalist Jason Schreier’s investigation revealed that the development of Borderlands 3 had cost the company $95 million.

Analysts added that $80 million of the $150 million was earned on Steam. They did not provide a breakdown of the revenue for other platforms.

The analysts also noted that to date, Borderlands 4 has been purchased by 2.5 million people, with 1.3 million of them buying the Steam version of the game.

In the Valve store, the most active Borderlands 4 buyers were from the USA, China, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The situation is similar on PlayStation, with slight variations — the top five markets there include the USA, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Canada. The situation in Epic Games Store and on Xbox remains unspecified.

Gearbox Entertainment itself has not yet shared any sales data for Borderlands 4.
