Study: 90% of gamers have played a remake or remaster at least once in the past year

This conclusion was reached by the consulting company MTM, which surveyed 1,500 console and PC gamers in the US and UK.

Silent Hill 2 Remake

MTM noted that 85% of players who engage with remakes and remasters have never played the original games. At least some of them explain it quite simply — at the time of the original release, they were too young or not even born yet.

76% of gamers told researchers that they enjoy updated versions of old games. For those who haven't played the original, these games have become a way to experience the classics in a modern interpretation. For others, they're a source of nostalgia, offering the chance to relive the same emotions they felt many years ago.

Nonetheless, MTM reports that 24% of gamers are dissatisfied with the trend of making remakes and remasters. In their opinion, developers of such games have opted for an easy way to enter the market but have sacrificed creativity in the process.

According to MTM's calculations, in 2025 alone, gaming companies intend to release around 30 remakes and remasters. For context, researchers pointed out that 200 such games have appeared on the market over the previous 13 years.
