More than 5 million people played Hollow Knight: Silksong in three days — analysis

The release of Hollow Knight: Silksong was extremely successful, reports the analytics company Alinea Analytics. According to their estimates, over 5 million people tried the new game across all platforms in the first three days, including those on the Game Pass subscription.

The initial audience distribution for Hollow Knight: Silksong was as follows:

  • Steam — 3 million people;
  • Game Pass — 1 million people;
  • PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox without Game Pass — 1 million people.

Analysts admitted that they had never seen such high sales for indie games on Steam within the first three release days. To illustrate the scale, they compared Hollow Knight: Silksong with other hit indie releases of 2025. Among these, the best three-day sales on Steam were Schedule I (858 thousand copies), PEAK (332 thousand copies), and R.E.P.O (253 thousand copies) — however, these games went viral not immediately but some time after their release.

Analysts also noted that the Steam version of Hollow Knight: Silksong alone has already brought Team Cherry 50 million dollars in gross revenue.

It is reported that the main markets for Hollow Knight: Silksong on Steam were the USA, China, Russia, Japan, and Brazil, while on PlayStation, they were North America (30%), East Asia (14%), and Western Europe (14%). The geographic breakdown for other platforms was not shared by the analysts.

Additionally, analysts indicated that 78% of Steam users who played Hollow Knight: Silksong had previously played the original Hollow Knight. Many also played Elden Ring (47%), Dead Cells (36%), and Dark Souls III (34%).

As of now, Team Cherry has not shared any figures regarding the game.
