Study: In China, there is a much more favorable attitude towards games based on popular IP than in Japan, Sweden, or Belgium

Analysts from Newzoo attempted to understand how residents of different countries feel about games based on Harry Potter, Pokémon, and other popular IPs. It was found that Europeans are among the least loyal gamers.

Hogwarts Legacy

According to Newzoo estimates, residents of both Western and Eastern Europe are likely to play such games at an average probability of 45%. Meanwhile, this figure stands at 64% in Latin America and 74% in South Asia.

Data for several specific countries:

  • India — 74% probability;
  • Thailand — 74% probability;
  • Vietnam — 74% probability;
  • China — 72% probability;
  • Brazil — 72% probability;
  • Belgium — 41% probability;
  • Netherlands — 39% probability;
  • Sweden — 31% probability;
  • Finland — 31% probability;
  • Japan — 31% probability.

It is worth noting that, according to Newzoo, the difference in percentages may partly be explained by respondents' attitudes towards surveys. Due to cultural characteristics, residents of some countries are more inclined to express agreement in their answers than those of other countries.

Newzoo also compared how familiar gamers from different countries are with various IPs. The results were predictable. For example, 70% of surveyed Americans know DC Comics characters, while only 21% of respondents in Japan are aware of them. Meanwhile, manga and anime like Doraemon are well-known in Asia, and far less so in other regions.
