Study: 19% of young Japanese have spent almost all their money on in-game purchases at least once
The company SMBC Consumer Finance surveyed a thousand Japanese people aged 20-29 about their spending in various areas. It turned out that Japanese youth actively make in-game purchases and sometimes spend much more money than advisable.

21.6% of those surveyed by SMBC Consumer Finance reported that they make in-game purchases regularly. On average, they spend 4,247 yen ($29.7) per month. However, 18.8% of the respondents admitted that at least once, they spent so much on games that they barely had money left to live on. Analysts noted that men were more likely to do so—among them, 23.2% were such extravagant gamers, compared to 14.8% of women.
Although almost a quarter of young Japanese later regret their in-game purchases, 20.8% stated that they do not enjoy games unless they spend money on them.
Specifically, 17.9% of respondents said they are willing to pay for advantages in games, and 22% were not opposed to paying for a chance to acquire a desired character.
SMBC Consumer Finance did not specify the names of the games where young Japanese most frequently make purchases.
