Deputy Gorelkin: "Focusing solely on the domestic market, we can forget about the development and growth of the gaming industry"

This morning, on March 10th, it became known that the Institute for Internet Development (IID) proposed that BRICS countries collaborate to regulate the gaming industry. Anton Gorelkin, a member of the Russian State Duma and Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Information Policy, commented on this idea in his Telegram channel.

Gorelkin believes that the IID's proposal is worthy of attention.

“I agree with the IID experts that the BRICS format is ideally suited for establishing unified positions on the rules for distributing gaming content (and, accordingly, a unified standard for labeling) and for enhancing the export potential of our game developers. I've said it many times: if you are focused solely on the domestic market, you can't even dream of the development and growth of this industry," Gorelkin wrote.

Gorelkin also spoke about the creation of a joint gaming platform in the BRICS countries similar to Steam. He pointed out that some countries within the bloc already have their own regional stores: for example, there is VK Play in Russia, Nuuvem in Brazil, and stores by Perfect Games, NetEase, and others in China. According to the deputy, all these stores feel the competition from Steam, hence the countries could indeed attempt to tackle it together. However, he doubts that a new platform needs to be created for this purpose.

Gorelkin added that if a BRICS analog to Steam were to be developed from scratch, it should not be funded by the Russian budget.
