Genshin Impact generated $530 million in Q1 2022, driving global rise of open world RPGs on mobile

Genshin Impact has become the number one mobile game by consumer spend in the first quarter of 2022 globally, according to the latest report by data.ai. miHoYo’s title had a strong impact on the rise of the open world RPG subgenre.

Key takeaways from the report

  • Genshin Impact reached $530 million in player spending on iOS and Android during the quarter ending March 31.
  • It is followed by Roblox, Honor of Kings, and Candy Crush Saga, with PUBG Mobile and Free Fire closing the top 10.
  • According to data.ai’s estimates, miHoYo’s mobile hit has generated around $2.7 billion since its launch in September 2020. However, AppMagic previously estimated the game’s lifetime player spending at over $3 billion.

  • Although the RPG genre has already been one of the highest-grossing categories on mobile for a while, Genshin Impact’s success helped bring other open world RPGs into the spotlight.
  • In 2021, this subgenre skyrocketed to sixth place on the list of the biggest RPG categories by consumer spend. It represents a 233% growth year-over-year.
  • Genshin Impact is almost equally popular among males and females. However, the share differs by region, with the game is 20% more likely to be played by female users in the Americas and EMEA.
  • Interestingly, Japanese players tend to buy the most expensive in-app item, a special bundle with 6480 Genesis Crystals for $120. Last month, 1 in every 5 purchases made in Japan was for this bundle, which contributed to 60% of the game’s total revenue in the country.
