In the first half of 2024, the German gaming market declined for the first time in at least five years

The revenue of the German gaming market fell by 6% in the first six months of 2024, as reported by the German association GAME. Experts note that this is the first decline in many years, attributed to the lack of major releases.

GAME did not specify the last time the German gaming market declined. It's worth noting that the association began tracking sales of games, gaming hardware, and gaming service revenue in Germany in 2019*. Since then, it regularly reported market growth. Thus, the German gaming market has been growing consistently for at least five years.

  • In the first half of 2024, the German gaming market earned a total of 4.3 billion euros.
  • More than half of this amount came from the purchase of games and microtransactions within them — 2.58 billion euros, a decline of 4%.
  • Sales of consoles, gaming accessories, and other gaming hardware amounted to 1.17 billion euros, a decline of 18%.
  • German residents spent 516 million euros on gaming online services, including subscriptions like Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, with an increase of 25%.

*Reports on the state of the German gaming market began appearing on the GAME website as far back as 2015. At that time, they were published under the name of the BIU association, which merged with GAME in 2018. Those reports covered data only on game sales.
