In 2023, the German gaming industry saw a 6% growth, reaching a market value of €10 billion
The German gaming sector expanded by 6%, reaching €10 billion in 2023. Mobile game revenues saw significant growth, nearly doubling to €2.9 billion from €1.5 billion in 2018.
Derived from data by Data.ai, these statistics were unveiled by the German Games Industry Association (Game). This marks a notable improvement compared to the 1% rise observed the previous year.
The uptick this year was driven by sales of game consoles, accessories, and in-app purchases.
In-app purchases constituted 98% of the mobile game revenue. Online gaming services brought in €43 million, while individual game sales tallied up to €5 million, representing less than 1% of the overall revenue.
Moreover, Game reported an increase of 300,000 mobile game players in Germany, totaling 24.6 million in 2023. Interestingly, a larger percentage of these players were women (52%) compared to men (48%).
"The dominance of smartphones in the gaming world, which began nearly fifteen years ago, continues to grow," stated Game's managing director Felix Falk. "Mobile games often appeal to those with minimal gaming experience."
Falk highlighted the remarkable development of the mobile gaming market, stating that alongside casual games, complex games and esports titles have now secured their place. "The diversity of game apps is one of their major strengths," he added.
