Gameshark calculated that the number of employees in Chinese gaming companies decreased from 280,700 at the end of 2022 to 270,000 by the end of 2023. Importantly, the data only accounts for people who are registered in China's social security system. The statistics also do not include employees from certain outsourcing firms and indie studios.

Tencent saw the largest reduction, with a decrease of 3,768 employees, followed by Bilibili (1,133 employees), Yonghang Technology (583 employees), IGG (501 employees), Youzu Interactive (385 employees), and NetEase (363 employees).

At the same time, some companies experienced growth. Notably, miHoYo increased its workforce by 927 employees over the past year, surpassing 6,000 employees.
