Analysis: Steam earned over a billion dollars in May
Steam's revenue is growing. According to GameDiscoverCo estimates, in May 2024, the platform's gross revenue amounted to $1.075 billion, which is 14% more than a year ago.
As gaming expert Simon Carless writes, this is a notable fact given that in recent times, analytics companies like Circana, GSD, and others have been reporting a decline in revenue for the console and PC gaming markets in various countries.
According to Carless, their reports may overlook several data points. For instance, analytics companies usually assess situations only in leading regions (most often in the West) and don't consider game sales in developing countries, where active growth is taking place. Additionally, many analysts rely on data from major publishers and developers, whereas a significant portion of Steam's revenue is generated by games from smaller teams.
