Tencent’s TiMi Studios becomes world’s largest developer after earning whopping $10 billion in 2020
TiMi Studios is known for mobile games like Call of Duty Mobile and Honor of Kings. The company reached $10 billion in revenue last year and, from now on, will also be developing titles for other platforms.
This financial milestone makes TiMi Studios the No. 1 game developer globally in terms of revenue, according to Reuters. It’s worth mentioning that it’s just one team within Tencent, which earned $73.8 billion in 2020 (games accounted for almost half of its total revenue).
“TiMi has been able to successfully operate these mobile games over the long term. It is now looking to take those learnings and create high quality games for a global audience that are accessible to all players, regardless of the platform they play on,” analyst Daniel Ahmad wrote.
In 2021, TiMi Studios will release new MOBA Pokémon Unite for iOS, Android, and Nintendo Switch. After that, the company will start developing AAA titles for PC and consoles. It aims to create a “new AAA game that resembles the virtual community from the movie Ready Player One,” TiMi engineer wrote last month.
According to Reuters, Tencent is now building new offices in Los Angeles — one for TIMi Studios and one for Lightspeed & Quantum, developers of PUBG Mobile. It will also help the tech giant in its mission to conquer markets outside China and develop games with “original intellectual property that has global appeal.”
