German users spend €6.2 billion on video games in 2019

Gamers in Germany spent around €6.2 billion on video games in 2019. That’s up 6 percent from 2018.

The is according to German games industry trade body Game, which relied on data from App Annie and GfK.

  • Hardware sales dropped 2 percent year-on-year to €2.4 billion.
  • Software sales grew 11% generating €3.9 billion.

Software revenue was boosted by in-game purchases, including microtransactions, DLCs and season passes. In 2019, consumers spent €2.3 billion in-game, up 16 percent from the year before.

Games purchases generated €1.05 billion, which is down 3 percent year-on-year.  Subscriptions to individual titles dropped 10 percent year-on-year to €113 million.

Online and streaming services (Xbox Live Gold, PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now, Google Stadia, etc.) brought it €461 million, up 31 percent from 2018.

Economically, video games revenues tend to decline towards the end of a console generation. However, this was not the case in Germany for 2019.
