State of hypercasual games in Q3 2022: 4 billion downloads, misleading ads, and top 10 titles

AppMagic has released a report on the state of hypercasual mobile games in the third quarter of 2022. Analysts broke down the latest market trends and highlighted the top 10 titles in this category.

Key takeaways

  • Hypercasual games reached 4 billion downloads on iOS and Android in total, which is down 10% from the second quarter.
  • However, AppMagic expects this category to grow around 5-7% year-over-year. Developing countries will be the main driver for it, while the developed countries will experience a small decrease year-over-year.
  • These titles generated $51 million combined, with Tier-1 countries, such as the US, Canada, Germany, and the UK, accounting for 58% of this sum.

Top hypercasual games by downloads

  • The top 10 is full of already successful titles, with Bridge Race still holding the first spot. It generated 44 million downloads in the third quarter.
  • The list also includes hypercasual hits like Race Master 3D (2nd place, 35.8 million installs), Going Balls (6th place, 26.6 million installs), and Tall Man Run (9th place, 25.6 million installs).
  • There were also four newcomers. Launched just two months ago, Snow Race ranked as the 3rd most downloaded hypercasual game in the third quarter with 34.4 million downloads.
  • It is a vivid example of hypercasual developers borrowing ideas from each others’ games. Snow Race takes the bridge-building mechanic from Bridge Race and combines it with snowball-rolling elements from Snowball.io, so the player has to roll snowballs big enough to cross the bridge.

  • Another new title on the list is Snake Lite, which debuted in fourth place with 33.4 million downloads. “The game looks like a regular Warm Zone.io clone, and as much as we tried to figure out the reason for its success, we couldn’t detect anything special,” AppMagic noted.
  • Azur Games-developed Hair Tattoo: Barber Shop Game ranked as the 8th most downloaded hypercasual game with 26 million installs. AppMagic attributes its growing popularity to the fact that the studio follows the latest TikTok trends.
  • The last newcomer in the top 10 is Dream Wedding, which generated 24 million downloads in the third quarter. It is another hypercasual runner, which also uses misleading ads that show things that are not presented in the game. This practice is commonly used by many mobile publishers, especially for casual games.

More data on these games and their gameplay videos can be found in the full report.
