MY.GAMES: in 2021, the volume of the Russian video game market reached $2.4 billion

The domestic gaming major MY.GAMES has released a report on the state of the Russian video game market for the past year. According to his estimate, the market volume reached 177.4 billion rubles (or $2.4 billion, based on the average annual dollar exchange rate of 73.6 rubles).

This is more than MY.GAMES predicted in November last year. Then she estimated the market at 165.6 billion rubles (or $2.26 billion at the same average annual rate).

Accordingly, this is more than the Russian market generated in 2020 in both ruble and dollar terms — by 9% and 7%, respectively.

It turns out that it was impossible to talk about stagnation or a fall in the market at the end of the year, although there was a significant decrease in the pace on the face. However, it was explained by the effect of the high base set by the lockdown in 2020. Recall that by the end of 2020, the Russian video game market has grown in rubles by 35%.

The market by platform at the end of last year looked like this:

  • 85.4 billion rubles accounted for PC games – ruble annual growth of 4.2% (48.1% of the market);
  • Mobile games earned 76.5 billion rubles — ruble annual growth of 14% (41.1% of the market);
  • Console games earned 15.5 billion rubles — ruble annual growth of 8% (8.7% of the market).

Also in the MY.GAMES report it is reported:

  • the segment of free-play games remains dominant in Russia (84.7%);
  • in the Russian mobile, by the number of downloads, the most popular genres were hyper—casual games and sandboxes, and by revenue – RPG and strategy;
  • at the end of the year, the premium segment decreased by 6%.

The company does not give forecasts for 2022. According to the press service, “The Russian gaming industry is faced with a truly unprecedented situation on the market.”

MY.GAMES sees possible growth points:

  • “a huge number of talented development teams that can offer users interesting content, the number of which will grow every year“;
  • “the Asian Games, which have taken a firm place in the hearts of Russian users for quite a long time and whose position is clearly only going to strengthen.”
