Infographics: the highest-grossing games and the most discussed companies of 2021
GamesIndustry edition.biz has published a large infographic with the results of 2021. The portal told about the total volume of the gaming market, the best-selling and downloaded titles, as well as about the most discussed companies and the number of new IP addresses from different publishers.The infographic is based on data from Newzoo (market size), Sensor Tower (mobile games), GfK (the best-selling games on physical media in the UK), Famitsu (the best-selling console games on physical media in Japan), ICO (the most publicized companies and titles) and Fancense (the main influencers and the most discussed games on Twitter).
Key dataThe volume of the global video game market has reached $180 billion — an increase of 1.4% in annual terms.
- 52% of this amount was accounted for by mobile titles. The share of consoles and PCs was 28% and 20%, respectively.93.4% of all revenue came from digital sales.
- At the same time, at least a significant proportion of physical copies remained only on consoles – 22.7%.The best-selling game on physical media in the UK was FIFA 22.
- In Japan — Monster Hunter Rise.Large publishers still rarely release new IP.
- Electronic Arts has released the most games for new franchises — three pieces. But Activision did not have such titles at all.AppLovin became the main mobile publisher for downloads — 1.5 billion total installations.
- Tencent became the highest—grossing publisher with $7.3 billion in revenue.The most downloaded mobile game was Garena Free Fire — 229.8 million downloads.
- Subway Surfers (180.7 million) and PUBG Mobile (172 million) are next.Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile shared the first place at the box office — they each have $2.8 billion in revenue.
- Next are Genshin Impact ($1.8 billion) and Roblox ($1.3 billion).Most of all in 2021, the press wrote about Fortnite, Cyberpunk 2077, Resident Evil: Village, Halo Infinite and Minecraft.
- Also, companies such as Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony, Epic Games and Ubisoft were most actively covered. Activision, despite the big scandal, takes only 11th place in the list.
