Newzoo: in 2020, the esports market will earn $950.3 million. This is $150 million less than expected
While the entire gaming business is growing by leaps and bounds against the background of the coronavirus, esports does not justify the hopes of experts. Newzoo has been lowering its forecast for its final revenue for the third time this year.
This time, analysts say that in 2020, the esports industry will be able to earn only $950.3 million instead of the initially projected $1.1 billion.
Note that the figures of $ 1.1 billion Newzoo indicated in the February forecast, but in April reduced them to $ 1.059 billion. After that, in July, the company recalculated again and called the estimated revenue of global esports in the amount of $ 974 million.
Newzoo explains the new abbreviation by the fact that viewers practically do not attend esports events due to the pandemic. Analysts believe that for this reason, ticket and merchandise sales in 2020 will bring only $52.5 million, not $121.7 million, as reported in the February report.
At the same time, Newzoo points out that the audience of esports itself has not only not decreased, but also increased. Experts suggest that by the end of the year it will exceed 90 million people.
