Study: Female Players Love Fantasy more than Men
Which settings and in-game weapons attract gamers of different genders more, the analytical company Quantic Foundry found out.
To this end, the company has launched a survey. It was passed by 1266 players. They rated the subjects of video games and the weapons presented in them with scores from 1 (“I don’t like it at all”) to 5 (“I really like it”).
Then the analysts compared the results in women and men.
Setting
The most attractive settings are epic fantasy and science fiction. Women gravitate more to the first, men to the second.
By the way, women are much more willing to choose fighting games or shooters in a fantasy setting than in a realistic one.
Also, many female gamers love games about the European Middle Ages. Men, in turn, often choose post-apocalyptic.
The least interesting categories for players of different genders are modern superheroics, zombie apocalypse, World War I and World War II. Moreover, men are much more interested in military subjects than women.
Weapon
Of all types of weapons, women prefer bows, swords and spells more. They choose the latter more often than men. Far fewer female gamers are interested in firearms, rocket launchers/bazookas and explosive devices.
Men are good about almost all the weapons presented. In games, they use firearms much more than women. But swords and bows are liked by both sexes almost equally.
Quantic Foundry concludes that women prefer fantasy weapons, while men prefer realistic or futuristic ones. This is confirmed by their choice of fantasy and science fiction.
The same can be concluded from the company’s previous research, where players were asked to choose one of three factions in a fictional strategy. Half of the men surveyed were inclined to the technical faction. Half of the female respodents chose magic.
