What does the German gaming market look like?

What is the German video game market — in figures and graphs told German Games Industry Association (Game).

Gaming audience

  • There are 34 million gamers in Germany.
  • The most popular gaming platform is smartphones (18.6 million people).
  • The second most popular platform is consoles (16.7 million people).
  • PC is in the third position in popularity (13.4 million people).
  • Tablets (10.9 million) are also a popular device for the game among the Germans.
  • The average age of a gamer in the country is 36.4 years.

Spending on games

  • The German video game market totaled €4.4 billion in 2018.
  • Most of the revenue came from mobile games — €1.5 billion.
  • Console games are in second place in terms of revenue in Germany — € 1.2 billion.
  • The third largest segment is computer games — €0.6 billion.
  • In general, the market grew by 9% (in 2017 it grew by 15%).
  • There are two main drivers of growth — a 97% increase in fees for online services (up to €353 million), as well as a 28% increase in payments for IAP (up to €1.9 billion).

Methodology

The Game figures are based on the results of data from the research company GfK and its divisions. The company resorts to different ways of collecting information. One of them is a survey of 25 thousand Germans about gaming preferences.
