Study: love of competitive games depends on age
There is an inverse relationship between the age of the player and the desire to play competitive games, – says the analytical company Quantic Foundry.
In order to find out what motivates users to continue playing, the company’s experts have created a classification of gameplay elements. There were 12 categories. After that, the analysts asked the study participants to rate each category. These assessments measured the level of motivation – the gamer’s desire to play projects with such gameplay elements.
12 categories of games
It turned out that age and the desire to compete are inversely related to each other.
In other words, the older the player, the less he likes the competitive element in games. This applies to PvP mode or team games. Women in general have the same tendency, although female players are less inclined to such games from the very beginning.
But the players love the strategy element regardless of age. According to the definition of Quantic Foundry, strategy “requires thoughtful decision-making and planning.” And the desire to play games containing this element does not decrease with age. Here, too, there is a connection with the gender of the player (women like strategies a little less), but not much.
Let’s add that 140 thousand players took part in the study. Most of them (82%) were men.
