The Russian tablet market has shrunk by half
According to the results of the second quarter of 2015, the tablet market earned 49% less than in the same period last year.
In absolute terms, the market shrank by a quarter: from April to June, only 1.27 million “tablets” were delivered to Russia.
IDC, which published the data, explains the situation by cannibalizing the market with smartphones with large screen diagonals.
“The growth of the smartphone segment with a diagonal of 5-5.5 inches in the second quarter exceeded 120% compared to the same period last year,” said Natalia Vinogradova, senior analyst at IDC.
As he writes cnews.ru , the IDS report generally confirms the data previously published by the Svyaznoy network. According to the latter, the decline in the tablet market reached 44% in the second quarter: tablets “earned” 9.2 billion rubles.
Only representatives of the retailer explained the current situation not only by cannibalization, but also by the saturation of the market.
We, in turn, recall that tablets, unlike smartphones, are not essential things today. Moreover, it is considered that they are technologically slower to become obsolete, which means they are changed less often than smartphones.
For mobile game developers, the described situation with tablets in the short term is unlikely to matter much. But the popularization of phablets indirectly indicates a further increase in graphics requirements and, as a result, an increase in software distributions, which may lead, given that cellular networks are not developing so fast, and tariffs are still high, to a decrease in the conversion of transitions to the application page in downloads. And here it will be important to learn how to optimize the size of applications.
P.S. Out of curiosity: the shares of tablet OS in the Russian market were distributed as follows: Android – 93.6%, Windows – 4.8%, iOS – 1.6%.
